-----------------------------------------------------------------------
By posting to this mailing list you give consent to unlimited
redistribution of your post. All messages are archived at
http://www.hyperreal.org/raves/mw/archives/ , and are publicly viewable.
Please keep this in mind when posting to the list.
Neither Hyperreal nor its maintainers, nor the maintainers

=== mw-raves vs. mw-raves-digest : THE DIFFERENCE ========================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Midwest Raves mailing-list is distributed in two ways. You should
subscribe to ONLY ONE of these lists, depending on which way you read
your mail. Both lists send out the exact same messages, but at different
times.
mw-raves
The messages are sent to you as they are sent to the list, one
by one. This is the list to be on if you post to the list
regularly, or if you filter your mail, or if you CHECK YOUR MAIL
REGULARLY.
mw-raves-digest
The messages are sent to you in "digest" form. That is, the server
waits around for enough messages to be sent to the list to make a
digest, then it bundles them up and sends them to you as one long
email message. You can read everybody's posts by scrolling down.
This is the list to be on if you find that your inbox is
overflowing, or if you don't check your mail regularly, or you
want an easy way to keep track of what comes from the list.

=== subscribing/unsubscribing ============================================

to mw-raves-subscribe@hyperreal.org
to unsub:
send a blank message from the address you wish to unsubscribe
to mw-raves-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org
to subscribe to the digest version:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== mw-raves-calendar ====================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
We also run a third, distinct list, mw-raves-calendar, which is
distributed each Wednesday. You don't have to be on mw-raves or
mw-raves-digest to get it, so if you only want to know about upcoming
events and have no interest in discussion, subscribe to this list only.
EVEN IF YOU ARE ON MW-RAVES or MW-RAVES-DIGEST YOU SHOULD SUBSCRIBE TO THE
CALENDAR AS WELL. We kept the calendar a separate list so that our friends
on the digest wouldn't get HUGE digests on Wednesdays due to the calendar.
Updates and corrections for the calendar go to: trout@hyperreal.org
to subscribe, mail:
mw-raves-calendar-subscribe@hyperreal.org
updates can be viewed at:

=== administration / trouble =============================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you send a message to the list, and it doesn't show up, check and make
sure you're sending it from the *exact* same address that you subscribed
with.
If your mailbox overflows and isn't accepting new messages for a while,
the list management software may automatically remove you from the
list...in which case you will need to re-subscribe once you've freed some
space in your mailbox. Please maintain your mailbox by immediately
deleting any e-mail that you don't need to save... this will also make
your life more organized :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Advertisements =======================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unsolicited advertising which is off-topic is not welcome on the list.
If in any doubt, ask the list admin first!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Topics ===============================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the *midwest raves* mailing list, and the posts should be
restricted to this subject. Naturally, over time list members get familiar
with each other and there is certainly room for an occasional off-topic
post now and then.
Clearly, midwest raves is about many things, and many related topics can
be of interest; e.g. the origin of various music styles, turntables and
samplers, the state of raves today, DJing and producing, recreational
drugs, upcoming events and reviews, rave-related social issues, etc. Use
your best judgement.
If you wish to send something to the list that you think readers will
enjoy/appreciate but is not related to the list topic, please put "NRR"
(Not Rave Related or Not Really Relevant) at the beginning of the subject
line, so that people can identify and ignore this message if they choose
to.
Please DO NOT post virus warnings, chain letters, messages sent to you
in private, or requests for drugs or copywrited software to the list.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Before posting =======================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Read the mailing list for a while before you post anything. This helps
you to get an understanding of the culture and the tone of the group.
Also, please take a moment to introduce yourself! :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Before replying ======================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
In general, it's a good idea to at least check all your mail subject
lines before responding to a message. Someone might already have answered
the question, and having multiple answers to the same question is usually
a waste of time and space. Don't reply unless you really have something
to say which is relevant for the discussion and all list members. Just
saying "me too", or "that's funny" is considered a Bad Thing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Quoting messages =====================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Be brief without being overly terse. When replying to a message, include
enough original material to be understood but no more. It is *extremely*
bad form to simply reply to a message by including all of the previous
message! Edit out all the irrelevant material.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Attachments ==========================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Be conservative in what you send and liberal in what you receive. This
means you should avoid sending attachments and other types of data which
require something special by the users.
In particular, you cannot send HTML-formatted messages to the list. If
your message contains HTML, it will not be delivered.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Signatures ===========================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of mail applications have pre-set (or even incorrect) settings,
something which makes it difficult to follow up and make a reply. It is
a good thing to have the mail application include a small piece with
contact information (called a signature, or .sig). Make sure the
signature contains the correct information, and that it isn't too
large. It should just state the necessary, not more.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Flames ===============================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Many people feel that rave culture attempts to embody the ideals of
Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect (PLUR). With this in mind, please avoid sending
flames (verbal, personal attacks) to the list.
People who abuse their posting privaleges with excessive flames my be
removed and banned from the mailing list without notice.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
=== Irony, jokes, etc. ===================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
E-mail does not carry emotions or intentions very well. Use symbols for
emphasis.
That *is* what I meant.
Use _underscores_ for underlining.
Use smileys to indicate tone of voice, but use them sparingly.
:-) is an example of a smiley.
Don't assume that the inclusion of a smiley will make the recipient
happy with what you say or wipe out an otherwise insulting comment.
