************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* Mid-West Raves #3 ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* Moderators notes: If you know of a future rave in the Mid-West area, please send info to me at this address, and I will include it in the next digest. If it's real important or something, I'll make a special digest. Seriously folks, if you know of one, send me the details as far ahead of time as possible. Check out those flyers in your local dance clubs. If your pals don't post info about a rave, then chances are some of you could go, but may end up watching "Golden Girls" or something instead. Please? Administration: Because of net access, there will be no digest between the dates of December 18 (Friday) and (tenatively) January 10 (Sunday). Reason being that I'm retreating 50 miles to the sunny climbs of Cincinnati, and won't have any access. Unless someone wants to give me their calling card number. Or if someone at UC (Univ of Cincy) would kindly let me use their account... This list service, done by hand by me, will continue until one of the following conditions is met: - my graduation (May 1993) - a permanent site/host/moderator is found - my sysadmin get's peeved at me (although he did give his approval) Enjoy. On to the submissions..... Some good stuff. A couple rave announcements, a calendar, and a helluva lot of chat about Cincy's House of Euphoria, cops, and general atmosphere, compliments of Mike Brown (Thanks Mike!) **************************************************************************** **************************************************************************** **************************************************************************** X-NEWS: miavx1 alt.rave: 2533 Newsgroups: alt.rave Subject: RAVIN BRAN 27 nov 92 From: tsines@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Todd J Sines) Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1992 01:47:10 GMT watch out! there are several flyer out and about with the wrong info line number. the correct information is as follows: ravin bran 27 nov 92 11pm-6am? all ages $5 (21+) $7 (21-) TRIPle bangin live acts...quadruple fresh dj's on the cuts...delivering the ruffest beats in the midwest. basslines to move your mind on thanksgiving weekend ***more midwest DJ's to come....(dj EZ cheez..plus more) LIVE IN CLEVELAND!!! However, any outdoor free rave (Golden Gate Park, some of the Full Moon raves, etc.) usually involves some amount of dealing with the police. At the last full moon rave here held in the Berkeley Marina, the cops actually parked their car right next to the dance floor and watched everyone dance, while a couple others walked around the area watching over people. It put a damper on the event, yes, but NO arrests were made, even though people were smoking MJ and doing nitrous. (And lots were X'ing, but that's not nearly so obvious - I was just worried about someone walking up to a policeman and hugging him :) Actually, the cops seemed to be halfway enjoying it - I swear at one point in the night I looked over at the cop sitting on the hood of his car parked next to the dance floor and saw his head bobbing a little. They were very benevolent, though it may have been mainly because it looked like we had our act together, and there was _very_ little alcohol there. On the other hand, over the summer there was a daytime rave at a waterslide park in San Jose, and there were two bikini-clad women walking around and asking the guys reeeeeally nicely if they could get them some X. Those who were able to get some for them found themselves in handcuffs shortly thereafter. Brian From: mjbrown@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Mike J. Brown) Subject: Re: House of Euphoria, Cincinnati Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1992 00:42:10 GMT >Went to House of Euphoria in Cincinnati last night... > >Bleah! Ack! How can you say that? >Met a lot of nice people, some of the DJs later on in the >evening were great (esp Richie Rich from Detroit), but the >event was so legal as to be downright scary. Personally, I would rather have it all legal than get arrested and fined like the poor kids at Grave last month. I don't see what the big thrill is in taking one's chances... I mean, if I'm going to drive 2 hours to arrive just as the party is shut down for illegal assembly of (how many people were there? about 2,000 is my guesstimate) with no permits or someone smoking a joint or whatever, I'd rather not go. Who cares if it wasn't your idea of an 'authentic' rave? I'd say it was the best rave Ohio has ever seen, the lights and atmosphere (people-wise) were fantastic, the dj's were great, the Moby show was incredible despite his tantrum and the fact that he wasn't really playing live, and everyone seemed to be having a super time. So what if it was in the downtown music hall with cops at the doors? >We walk in the door... Two cops. Walk up the stairs... >Another cop. Walk around the room... a cop by every door. >Two cops manning the bathrooms. >Needless to say, this put a damper on the evening. What were you planning on doing, shooting up heroin and running around naked? Didn't you see how many people were tripping, jogging around, hugging each other? Did the cops do anything to spoil any of that? All they did was move people off the stage, and that was only after they were asked to by the rave's own security. I smelled pot at one point. The cops just stood around, and one was even bobbing his head to the music. They seemed to be enjoying the lights and laser, and probably felt relieved that for once in their careers they got to patrol a huge party without having to bust it up for alcohol-related fights, sexual assaults, etc. >Does it ever get this bad in other parts of the country, or >am I just doomed for living in the midwest? *sigh* Jeez, what's the big deal? It was great; lighten up. Mike Date: Sun, 22 Nov 92 22:57:22 -0500 From: Sho Kuwamoto Subject: Re: House of Euphoria, Cincinnati >Jeez, what's the big deal? It was great; lighten up. Yeah, yeah... *grumble, grumble*... I suppose the problem was that the event didn't meet my expectations. I've definitely been to raves which were more underground but less fun. Like I said, I met a lot of nice people, and the music near the end of the evening was great. Now, then... The reasons I didn't enjoy myself as much as I'd hoped... The crowd didn't seem as energized as could be. I just chalked that up to the cops. A) The event was almost completely clean. If you wanted something and you didn't bring your own, you were out of luck. B) Even if you didn't want anything, it was as if you were being chaperoned. I've been to legal raves before, but I've never been to one where there were cops (at least not all night). When it comes down to it, we could have just gone to a club. Ok. What else? The music towards the beginning of the evening (before Moby's set) was OLD. Not only was it old, it wasn't mixed well. The lights were fantastic, but the person running the lights didn't seem to be quite on the ball. It probably didn't help that everyone I talked to (except for the people from Cincinnati) seemed to feel the same way I did. I talked to a girl from Detroit who I'd met at a rave there about a month ago (she was disappointed), I talked to some people from Milwaukee (verrry disappointed. "We drove eight fucking hours for this!" they said...), talked to people from Chicago, etc., etc., etc... *sigh* I guess I sound really negative about this whole thing... I don't mean to be. I did have a good time. Like I said, I met a lot of nice people, and the music got good right around when Richie Rich started spinning. Maybe my expectations were just too high. If I'd known what the thing was going to be like, I'd probably still have gone, and I wouldn't have had any room to be disappointed. I'm not sorry that I went. I just wish it could have been better. -Sho From mjbrown Mon Nov 23 00:37:12 1992 Subject: Re: House of Euphoria, Cincinnati Date: Mon, 23 Nov 92 0:37:12 EST I appreciate your explanation. I suppose it could have been more energized. The crowd was sometimes left wanting more, sometimes they were energized, sometimes practically just standing around... that is the fault of the dj's moreso than the cops. About the dj's: we got there just before Moby played. The guy spinning then sucked. I just found out today that the main dj from New York (not Keoki, the other one) missed his plane so he didn't show up. Thome called Kevin Grimm (Kevy Kev) in Columbus at 8:30 and told him to be there by 9:30 (it is a two hour drive). So when we got to Cinci, Kevin, Boomer, and Richie were all hanging out at the hotel saying "Thome's being a dick so we're gonna show up late" which is exactly what they did. So I'm sure everything was a disaster for the organizers since none of the good djs were there until late. After Moby was on, Kevin, Boomer, and Richie spun, in that order. You might have seen me standing behind them taking pictures. As for Richie's music, well, it was definitely the hardest, most energetic of what was played that night, but he went on WAY too late. People were getting really tired, the crowd just had no energy left. What they needed was a change of pace, something housey, slower, and more soulful. What they got was BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM. And the cops, well, I can see your point about not being able to acquire any substances you didn't bring with you, but why is that such a big deal? I like to trip as much as the next guy, even more, but I didn't feel let down that I couldn't openly buy sheets from the smart bar. Overall, that was the biggest rave Ohio has ever seen. It is interesting that the Milwaukee people were saying 'eight hours for THIS?' ... I wonder what they think... I'm not flaming you, I just thought it was really good. I didn't feel like I was being chaperoned just because cops were at the doors and entranceways. But then, I wasn't hoping to do anything they wouldn't approve of, either. Mike From: mpisano@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Michael A Pisano) Subject: HOE RAVE: aka HOUSE OF THE PANOPTICON: aka HOUSE OF EUPHORIA in Cinnci Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1992 04:09:57 GMT To all who attended the big "rave" last Friday night, and to those lucky ones who stayed home, saved your money, and didn't witness the neutering of a liberating cultural virus. Note: I am going to try to stay as objective as I can in describing the trajic events of last Friday in, without argument, the home of censorship, Cinncinati, OH. The Atmosphere: Yes, there were 10 (I think) Intellebeams. Yes, Moby was pretty good. Yes, the Sega Video wall Featuring Sonic The Hedgehog was a nifty touch. Yes, the music was great most of the time. Yes, the single laser was a nice touch, as well as the neat glasses. ....BUT There was at least one cop for every intellebeam stationed at 200 ft. intervals around the hall/dance floor; sitting, atanding, all staring fixedly into the crowd to spot any misbehaving. I have my own ideas of what a rave should be that I will try not to go into too much but I am absolutely sure, without a doubt, and I'll stay home and sell give away all of my 12"s and Techno CDs to the person that can convince me otherwise.... COPS DO NOT BELONG AT RAVES !!! My friends and I tried to come up with the most similar experience to describe Thome Tomato's H.O.E. (perhaps the acronym lends a little insight, maybe it was intended) last friday. Two of the most prominent ones were: 1) Being at a high-school dance 2) The final scene of the BLUES BROTHERS movie (when everyone is partying in the prison: aka JAILHOUSE ROCK) But the most appropriate way to get the actual feeling would be to rent the video THE SOUND OF MUSIC, watch only the Edleweiss scene where the whole family is singing with the walls lined with Nazis. THAT'S IT. There were pigs everyplace you looked, they were on rotation (and I know this because I spent a good half hour listening to the commander give orders) so that no section of the dance floor at any time was unwatched. Now I didn't notice this at first, I spent the first two hours from about 11:00 to 1:00 dancing, getting tranced out pretty good with a few friends of mine, one of which had never been to a rave before (and still hasn't, I keep trying to convince her). Then, after we'd all lost a lot of fluids, we went in search of something to drink. THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE TO DRINK EXCEPT SMART DRINKS which there was at least a half hour wait for, no fruit mixed in, and tiny portions. Of course there were the water fountains with constant lines of 15 or so people, and how can you replentish your fluids in a quick sip from a trickling faucet. Anyway, the fun started about this time when some heavily masqueraded folks came in, one woman wearing nothing but full bodypaint and a bikini bottom. Well they were extrenely fun people able to contribute a lot of decadent energy to the crowd, and just seeing them almost made up for all the pigs, until they grabbed ger and escorted her to the bathroom. There they ordered her to wear her heavy fun-fur coat or she would be thrown out and arrested. This wasn't the end of it. The two pigs that were giving the orders followed her out to the dancefloor with flashlights, telling all the other officers about this "naughty girl" and to keep constant watch on her to make sure she kept her coat on. This was done by occassionally shining flashlights into the crowd to locate "ms naughty." This was a little much for me, and I couldn't dance for BIG BROTHER anymore. When they weren't patrolling the dancefloor, they would make sure the little deliquents throughout the crowd were not sitting anywhere they weren't suppose to. Another fun intervention with the pigs was when MOBY's sound cut out and the cops immediately came out and pushed people away from the stage as if a riot was about to break out. By the way, even though MOBY suggested it, the crowd was extremely peaceful, to the point of submission actually. A riot might have been interesting, actually, although un-Rave-like. Apart from the cops, there was the building's own security that sat behind the huge bar (not in operation) along one of the long walls. These guys helped the cops stare at all the freaks to make sure nothing got out of hand, and nobody hurt the pretty space. Two of these guys walked up to the friend I was with and my girlfriend and asked them if they knew where to get any Acid. It was a real obvious sting operation that even embarassed us for the lack of effort on their part. A couple of times people started dancing on the stage, the second time it was ms. Naughty and her crew at which about ten cops swarmed around the stage and made sure she wasn't going to pull off her fun-fur bearing her bare bodypaint. I thought it extremely iyronicthat Demi Moore is allowed to grace the cover of Vanity Fair with a suit of bodypaint, but get a bit away from pretty and conservative, and into the cooler. Anyway, everyone was proptly kicked off the stage and there awas no more trouble with ms Naughty because the lights abruptly came on then at 4:00 AM. This is about the time Raves really get effective. In response to someone who flamed another critique of the HOE Rave (as in the Hip-Hop sense of the term HOE) "What did you want to do shoot up heroine or something," NO, I didn't but if someone else wanted to, why not?, and if people wanted to get naked, why not? If people wanted to have trbal trance sex on th dancefloor, go for it: that's what raves are suppose to be about. This is 21st century Voodoo, people, not a new way to stay out late and have fun at the same time. Acid House, Rave, Warehouse Parties have a history that made them a force to be reckoned with to the powers that be, not a way for them to make more taxpayer money as hired security. There was a time when I was all for the proliferation of Rave into the mainstream because I felt that there was such a strong force behind it that its entrance into the mainstream would beautifully infect the majority of zombies out there that are subconsciouslly crying out for even the slightest bit of enlightenment, a communal experience, or a dose of hopeful party energy. This cannot take place to any serious degree within a circle of police who have you confined, very vocally, to a space in which you paid $12.50 to get in to. I came home wanting to sell back all of my techno collection and take the loss, but I think I may just slip back into the underground where there must be some pure Jes Grew happening that hasn't been yet appropriated by the Wallflower Order. Ishmael Reed would have puked at the number of "Talking Androids" dressed in Cincinati Blues last Friday, keeping a tight alchemical cicle of containment on everyone at HOE. To all of you that thought it was a step in the right direction for the Rave phenomena, I hope you get rich and famous in the mainscene, but you'll probably just OD on Techno Trivia and blow all your money on RaveGear and Corporate Dance Records. To all the police, you should be ashamed in the face of all of your brothers and sisters, and oh yea, Fuck all y'all sell-out whack-ass talkin' androids: you still have the man's chain tight 'round yo neck. Sure we're all just a buncha white kids tryin' to ressurrect the Jes Grew. But we all gotta serve in our own way. And by servin', I don't mean in uniform motherfucker. To Thome Tomato: your official seal of quality don't mean shit to me anymore. I'd like my stodgy-ass $12.50 back and all the gas money I wasted driving 2 and 1/2 hours to Cinci and back (about $17.00). You can mail it to me at PO BOX 141535, Columbus, OH 43214. I wasn't flaming Sho for his criticism of House of Euphoria. My 'what did you want to do, shoot up heroin in front of everybody and run around naked' was just a way of asking why he felt so oppressed by the cops, who didn't seem to be doing much of anything. I didn't see any of the 'nasty girl' goings-on but we got there kind of late. When everybody was jumping up on stage, the ravers were kind of being obnoxious... follow the leader type of thing. If I were renting those lights and music hall I wouldn't want a mob of people tromping all over the cords and exceeding the weight capacity of the stage. That was why they were 'rushing up to the stage as if to prevent a riot'; the reason the power went out to all the front amps during Moby's set was because someone tripped on a power cable. And I was right there by the stage; the cops didn't do ANYTHING until the rave security motioned for them to help clear people off. It didn't put that much of a damper on things, anyway. I think you guys have really built up this romanticized image of what a "REAL RAVE" is supposed to be like and you are going to be disappointed by everything that doesn't live up to this 'secret intimate love-sex-drugs hippie dance fest' ideal. I'm not saying that cops all around made it better, but considering that they were there, it seemed like a damn good time was had by most everyone else, and like I said before, it was obvious that a lot of people were tripping and there was some pot smoking along the walls too, and the cops and security turned a blind eye to that, which is far better than what one would have expected. Really, this whole 'big brother' thing is a bit far-fetched. If it was that bad, it would have ended up like Grave. If it was all too above-ground for you, throw your own rave. Doesn't somebody on alt.rave have a .sig that goes 'how many ravers does it take to change a light bulb? a hundred, one to change the light bulb and 99 to whine about how much better the last one was'. Well, imHo we are lucky to have what we got and since it was good and fun for 99% of the people there, why bitch about how it wasn't the way you think a REAL RAVE is supposed to be like? Sure, it wasn't a step forward for raves, but it sure as hell was better than sitting on my ass in Columbus all night. Humbly, Mike B :) From: disc@quads.uchicago.edu (Little Fluffy Cloud) Subject: Re: House of Euphoria, Cincinnati Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1992 06:24:56 GMT Here's my two cents: If ya gotta play by the rules, play by the rules. Get the cops. Get the music hall location. Play it safe. I have not found a single situation where one needs entirely to play by the rules. People are still throwing good parties in LA illegally. People are throwing parties in Milwaukee again in warehouses, not music halls. If you know how to plan a rave right, you don't need to sell out 100%. It loosens people up, and a crazy warehouse is oh so much better than a music hall. If the party was dope, the party was dope. I wasn't there. I shouldn't complain. I have had fun at legal parties and illegal parties. It's just that if a party goes off and it's legal, and a party gets busted and it's illegal, one cannot draw the conclusion that all illegal parties will be busted and one must run a party legally in order to be fun. Grave Rave was busted for many reasons. An irresponsible promoter was one of those reasons. A greedy police department was another. The entire event was a public embarrassment for the city of Milwaukee, and I think this will set precedence fo law enforcement officials in dealing with raves around the country. GAn incedence such as this will assuredly never happen again, with the national press it has received and the overwhelming negative criticism. =Jerry Dischler=|Little Fluffy Cloud|=disc@quads.uchicago.edu= From: jwhwang@eos.ncsu.edu (JOAN WU HWANG) Subject: Re: HOE RAVE: aka HOUSE OF THE PANOPTICON: [...] Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1992 16:01:54 GMT mpisano@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Michael A Pisano) writes: >...the fun started about this time when some heavily masqueraded folks >came in, one woman wearing nothing but full bodypaint and a bikini bottom. >Well they were extrenely fun people able to contribute a lot of decadent >energy to the crowd, and just seeing them almost made up for all the pigs, >until they grabbed ger and escorted her to the bathroom. Something for the FYI drawer ... the person who got the idea to bust Grave in such a major way was one of the city attorneys. Two years ago he was living next door to a rental property which was inhabited by some frat-type students here at UWM. They held a fairly large party, which used to happen quite a bit in the area until this event. On a certain Saturday night this city attorney came home only to find this party going on. He called the cops, they showed up and asked the folks to tone it down. When the city atty. heard this he marched over, flashed his credentials and threw his weight around. The only reason this party got busted was because he wanted quiet. What does this have to do with Grave? Well, the individual in question has had a vendeta going on for years now as far as young people having a good time. I'm not sure how much greed plays into this. Many of the cops there at Grave just couldn't understand what all the fuss was about once they got inside and saw exactly who we were and what we were all about. I didn't see any of the stuff that one guy was talking about, I think he was just being paranoid or something and was seeing what he wanted to see. THen he had the gall to bitch about having only smart drinks and water to drink. Only having the water fountains was sort of lame, but hasn't he ever read an article on raves in any magazine? Every article I've seen makes a pretty obvious point of the fact that alcohol is looked down upon for the most part, so raves are generally alcohol-free events. It also makes it a lot easier to get permits for noise and whatnot if the powers-that-be see that there won't be any alcohol to cause all sorts of problems. What's wrong with having a rave in a nice place? Some (most?) of us live in pretty shitty places to begin with, so the last thing we want is to spend 4,5, or 6 hours in a warehouse that looks worse than the places we live in just for the sake of being 'underground' or living up to somebody's expectation of what a 'real rave' is supposed to be like. Who's to say what a real rave is? Is it supposed to be like they were in Manchester? Where the people dealing the drugs basically took over the whole scene and really fucked things up? Or is it supposed to be like grave in Milwaukee where people get arrested just for being there and therefore guilty by association with the people who actually were breaking laws? Being arrested can really ruin your day. Not that I've ever been arrested, but I don't imagine it to be a whole lot of fun. Why am I telling all of this to you? I should be posting this, but I don't want to deal with some jerk from England telling me that rave is dead and everything good is house music. Since it seems to me that what's "in" in th UK is whatever is approved by the music press or whomever morrissey happens to mention that week, I really have a hard time putting up with somebody who's telling me that rave is bollocks and that I should be listening to music that at IMHO is more mainstream in the U.S. than I could ever envision rave/techno becoming. (how's that for a run on sentence? it sounded just fine in my head...) When the blue room original single hits number one, I'll admit that maybe I was wrong, but it's not likely to happen. Imagine Casey saying "And at number one this week, a two man band from England who simply call themselves 'the orb' and their 40 minute song "blue room". Sit back light up a joint or drop some acid and enjoy..." I just can't picture it. _ -Dav >>>END FORWARDED TEXT<<< **************************************************************************** **************************************************************************** **************************************************************************** **************************************************************************** From: IN%"mjbrown@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu" "Mike J. "Disorientation" could be a "Perpetual Dawn" remix, "Angelica" has the same beat as Outlands, then "Soufie" sounds a lot like the Saints "Trance Atlantic Flight". Even though there is a lot of familiarity on this album, it all stands by itself. Deeper, and of course dubbier, any ambience fan would enjoy this a lot. "Desert Wind" is extremely scrumptious, especially for "Passion" and Delirium fans. On the downside, "Ketamine" and "Sexy Selector" are slightly annoying. Summary: 9/10. "Halcyon" takes the "la la" vocals from Opus III's "Fine Day" and changes them into something a bit weirder, then mutates the theme in Orbital fashion for eleven minutes. "The Naked and The Dead" begins with a starting bongo that disappears into a housey vocal. Finally, "Sunday" is a bit harder than the rest, but less exciting. Summary: 9/10. This showcases a lot of early, but unfortunately boring, house music. There is also a nice smattering of tracks reminiscent of the New York voodoo movement of the mid 80's. The Orb's track is a disappointment as well. Alex seems rather directionless at this point. Yet how can I slag an album which gives me a remix of the Untouchables theme? Summary: 5/10. I suppose that the forthcoming album, Tubular Bells II will be more of the same progression. I mean it was cool the first time, but listening to it now only brings back memories of blocks and Tonka trucks for me. Orb "mixes" are getting to be a private joke to Alex and Thrash. It seems that they can just go back to their archives and pull out an experiment, then hand it to the publisher. Their "mix" bears absolutely no resemblance to the original. However, in this case, this is a plus. Summary: 3/10. Wonderful new release from The Orb. Saddening new release from Mike Oldfield. The lead must have just come in from a foot race, for he gasps for breath as he attempts to rap out a unexciting litany about karma. Samples are sparse, replaced by a grinding guitar and plodding drum set. I hope the album is better than *this*. "Eat Me" doesn't change the pace, great title, but they don't do anything with it. "PWEI-Zation" is refreshing after these dirges, but was released on "PWEI vs. Dirty Harry" a couple of years back. Summary: 2/10. Unplayable and unexciting. Sounds like a poor PWEI cover band. Of course everything I've heard him do is great and everything on this album is no exception. However, I was disappointed to see the same original remixes of "Go", "Drop A Beat", "Electricity", and "Have You Seen My Baby". Three of these were on the Instinct compilation leaving "Electricity" which was on the "Drop A Beat" single. You'd think that Moby would have been able to fill these spots with something new, but I guess this is more of a total retrospective than a brand new album. However, the new tracks do kick. "Help Me To Believe" is outstanding, probably my favorite Moby track ever. Summary: 8/10. Great stuff as usual, but too many of them have been out a while. "What is Music" isn't available on the album, and it is apparent why. Once again Ian B unleashes the same samples in a different song upon the suspecting public. The title track and its remix brings tears to the eyes of a person who once loved "Spice" and "Inner Mind". As for Juan Atkins remixes of "Spice", the "Low-Power Mix" is a nice change, but Juan mislabled the "Hi-Power" mix. It should have be "Low-Power 2". The original version had far more energy than either. What it didn't have was the crackling pops, bad production, and lame break beat sample. Juan needs to clean his records better. Ian B needs to dig up some new samples. Summary: 4/10. What is music?
